We’ve had a lot of our customers read that Canon has recently acquired leading network management software platform, Milestone Systems. Among our customer’s key concerns is that Milestone has always been known for its commitment as on open platform/architecture and vendor neutrality. Will the acquisition affect this neutrality? First, let’s clear something up. Milestone Systems was acquired by Canon Group. I different division of Canon that does not manage their camera development and sales. Canon has a clear ambition to drive future growth through diversification and has identified network video surveillance as a strategic new business area. Bringing Milestone into the Canon Group will significantly enhance Canon’s software capabilities in this sector.
According to Lars Thinggaard, President & CEO, Milestone Systems: “Milestone is extremely excited about the huge potential that being part of a global group will provide. Canon respects how we built our business with our partners and supports our strategy of providing open platform solutions and therefore the need to remain a standalone company within the Canon Group. We feel this step is right for taking both our business and support for suppliers and partners to a new level.”
We here at WLANmall are pretty optimistic about the future of the Milestone platform. We think that the support of Cannon Group can help Milestone accelerate its business and development of new products while still operating as a standalone company.

Here are 9 new features of XProtect Corporate 4.0 that you should really know about. Check out the corresponding screenshots under the text.
#1 Video Bookmarking – Mark and annotate important video on the fly in live mode or while reviewing video in playback
#2 Storage Grooming - XPCO 4.0 now allows you to archive the same video multiple times and give you the option of reducing the video’s framrate to save storage. Example: You can record all cameras at 15 FPS then after 24 hours archive the video at full frame rate for 30 days, after 30 days archive again reducing the frame rate to 5 fps and then finally after 60 days archive again and reduce the frame rate to 1 fps for long term storage.
#3 Edge Storage – Upon loss of connectivity to the recording server recording fails over to the camera’s SD card and then pushes that video back to the recording server once the connection has been restored.
#4 Federated Architecture – You can now manage multiple individual installations of Corporate (children) from one main (parent) management client. The great thing about this is that the parent management server can see and interact with the child but the child can not see the parent. Give users more granularity when controlling large distributed installations.
#5 Ignore device communication error – I love this one because a lot of my clients stream video over cellular connections which breifly time out every couple of minutes. In the past this has forced us NOT to use email notification on camera disconnect for fear of flooding the inbox. With this feature however we can now enable camera down notification and limit the number of emails we get!
#6 Privacy Mask (note new pen size options)
#7 Smart Client Profiles – Control what SMARTclient features are shown to specific users
#8 Time profile integration with roles, devices, etc – Allows you to now limit when devices are available, when certain roles are allowed to access video, etc
#9 Recording Search – Search for sequences or bookmarks and get a preview pop up

COPENHAGEN – June 12nd, 2010. Milestone Systems, the open platform company in IP video management software, today launches a new product called XProtect™ Essential, designed for small businesses with the future in mind. XProtect Essential´s out-of-the-box features manage the basic needs of IP video surveillance operation for single-server installations of up to 26 cameras and five concurrent users. With pricing that is competitive in the low-end market while offering future extendibility, XProtect Essential provides optimal value: the combination of strong surveillance capabilities with ease of use and a flexible licensing model that allows upgrades and seamless system expansions.
Consolidated single-point management access to the XProtect Essential recording server includes system configuration wizards, automated device discovery and a smart bulk configuration option that enhance administration of the system. Wizards guide through the process of adding cameras, configuring video, scheduling recordings, adjusting motion detection settings, and managing system users. This makes the system easy to install and deploy.
XProtect Essential includes the newest XProtect Smart Client with a friendly user interface for all daily operations: control cameras, view live or play back recordings simultaneously, investigate quickly with the Sequence Explorer, create and export evidence fast. There is a wide choice in view layouts (private or shared) and adaptability for different skill levels to aid novice users, while experts can optimize the application for the most efficient operation.
“It is brilliant simplicity! Designed for the basic needs of smaller businesses that want easy-to-use yet advanced surveillance features at an unbeatable price/capability ratio, XProtect Essential also allows expansion for future requirements. Our software enables just that kind of forward capability to scale up an installation with new cameras and seamlessly migrate to other Milestone XProtect solutions,” says Christian Bohn, Head of Product Management at Milestone Systems.
The physical security market has been dominated by analog and DVR monitoring products which typically lock in customers to hardware-centric systems that only work with a certain number of cameras, from one manufacturer only. When a customer wants to add a few more cameras or the DVR needs repair or replacement, they have no flexibility.
With Milestone XProtect Essential Video Management Software (VMS), customers can choose from the industry´s widest selection of supported cameras (currently over 885 network device models from more than 80 manufacturers), and mix different brands as needed to fit exactly their surveillance and budget demands. As their business grows or changes, it is easy to add or replace cameras individually, taking advantage of new innovations that come to market.
With base software license (SLC) and separate camera device licenses (DLKs) instead of fixed combined packages, customers have higher flexibility when purchasing XProtect Essential. Available in 22 languages, it is sold and implemented by authorized Milestone partners worldwide.

By that the work not only becomes easier, but the cost of training new operators can also be reduced.
- Updated Smart Client Graphics
New icon-based control of panes in the side bar, combined with new scroll function makes navigation far easier. Slimmer application title bar design leaves more space to the video.
Finnish language support introduced, which means that the Smart Client now is available in 20 different language versions.

When the Swedish national railway began major construction of the Malmo CityTunnel Project in 2005, workplace security was of utmost concern. Now the tracks are almost ready, and it is IP video surveillance management software from Milestone Systems that helps make sure everything goes smoothly.
COPENHAGEN, March 4th, 2010. When construction is complete in December 2010, 17 kilometers of new high-tech, double-track electric rails will connect Malmo Central Station in Sweden with the Oresund Bridge to Denmark. Six kilometers of that will run underground in two parallel tunnels through the center of Malmo. The goal of the CityTunnel connection between Malmo and Copenhagen is to greatly reduce the travel time between the two cities – and not least to transform Malmo Central Station into a transit hub that powers the pan-Scandinavian network.
Several thousand people have been involved in this construction, and today around 100 men are working with the last preparations. It is precisely this reduction in personnel that has made the managers of the CityTunnel project sharpen security for the workers with IP video surveillance from Milestone Systems.
“In conjunction with reducing the workforce in this phase, we have increased the security because even though the project will soon be finished, we have to continue to ensure that the work goes smoothly and problem-free and that our employees have safe work conditions. We have therefore chosen IP network video surveillance, and it has already solved a number of issues for us,” says Mikael Lundquist, Manager for Personnel & Work Environment, CityTunnel.
In collaboration with Insupport, a Certified Milestone Partner, the CityTunnel project identified weak points in their security and it was clear that network video surveillance was necessary. The choice was Milestone XProtect™ Enterprise, an IP software solution designed as an open platform that supports the largest options for cameras and integrations with other systems – both existing and future. The video surveillance is installed in three train stations, as well as the tunnels, with about 30 Sony IP cameras, including the rugged stationary dome model SNC DF80 and the panorama model SNC RZ25 with Pan/Tilt/Zoom and day/night functionality.
Strong Nordic Partner
“The decision to use Milestone was easy. We know Milestone really well, and they offer a very strong platform that allows integration with all kinds of software and hardware. Among other things, we can archive the surveillance video in very high quality and quickly export images to other locations, which has huge value for the CityTunnel,” states Pontus Pettersson, VP at Insupport Natverksvideo.
Three security guards patrol the underground stations where the surveillance is installed. When they walk their normal rounds they can also have their colleagues follow with the video monitors at any time. The system has been used primarily for documentation which has already been a big help, for example in the case of two inebriated Danes who got lost in the tunnel in January. With the video images, there was incontrovertible evidence that was immediately given to the police.
“We have been very pleased with the Milestone software, not least because it is easy to use by our security personnel, but of course because it makes our work much safer,” concludes Mikael Lundquist.”
